Which vaccinations are required before traveling?

The CDC and WHO recommend that all travelers to Kenya be up to date on routine vaccines (polio, measles, mumps, hepatitis A and B, etc…). The CDC also recommends that travelers receive the cholera vaccine, typhoid vaccine and malaria medication. The yellow fever vaccine is recommended depending on the traveler’s itinerary and meningococcal vaccine is recommended for travelers to Kenya during the dry season (December to June). For the most uptodate information visit the CDC or WHO websites (Kenya – Traveler view | Travelers’ Health | CDC).

What are the tipping practices in Kenya, and what is a typical amount to give?

In Kenya, tipping is generally appreciated but not mandatory. It is a way to show appreciation for good service in various settings, including restaurants, hotels, and for tour guides. Here are some standard gratuity practices:

1. Restaurants

In restaurants, it’s customary to leave a tip if the service is satisfactory. A standard gratuity amount is usually around 10% to 15% of the total bill. Some establishments may include a service charge, so it’s a good idea to check the bill before tipping.

2. Hotels

For hotel staff, tips are appreciated for services such as bellhops, housekeeping, and concierge assistance:

  • Bellhops: 100 to 200 Kenyan Shillings (approximately $1 to $2) per bag.
  • Housekeeping: 100 to 300 Kenyan Shillings (approximately $1 to $3) per night.
  • Concierge: Tip based on the service provided, usually around 200 to 500 Kenyan Shillings (approximately $2 to $5) for special requests.

3. Tour Guides and Drivers

For tour guides and drivers, gratuity is often based on the quality of service and the length of the tour. A common practice is to tip:

  • Tour Guides: 500 to 1,000 Kenyan Shillings (approximately $5 to $10) per day.
  • Drivers: 300 to 500 Kenyan Shillings (approximately $3 to $5) per day.

When your tour guides are also your drivers, it’s customary to tip them based on the quality of service and the length of the tour. A general guideline for tipping in this scenario is:

  • Daily Tours: 500 to 1,000 Kenyan Shillings (approximately $5 to $10) per day for excellent service.
  • Multi-Day Tours: For longer tours, you can consider tipping 1,000 to 2,000 Kenyan Shillings (approximately $10 to $20) per day, depending on the level of service and your satisfaction.

Ultimately, the amount can vary based on the experience and the overall satisfaction with the service provided. Always feel free to adjust the tip according to your budget and the quality of the experience.

4. Other Services

For other services, such as taxi drivers, rounding up the fare or adding a small amount (100 to 200 Kenyan Shillings) as a tip is appreciated but not obligatory.

Final Note

While gratuities are appreciated, they are not compulsory. The amounts mentioned are guidelines, and tipping should be based on your satisfaction with the service provided. Always consider the quality of service and your own financial situation when deciding how much to tip.
